I often refer readers to Power Line. Those guys are thorough in their research. They also understand many of the legal issues of the day. John Hinderaker put some numbers together comparing the violence in Iraq to violence in major American cities and the American Civil war. The figures place things in perspective. Interesting note. I looked up the stats on civilian deaths under Saddam Hussein's reign of terror here. During his 24 years between 75-125 died per day. That's roughly 2170-3875 in a month. Compare that with the 3500 nation wide in Iraq during July. Read the Power Line stats here.

Iraq watch was especially good; but the Civil War issues of Powerline are important.
I wish there was better "Civ deaths under Saddam since 1998 (official regime change policy)" figures.
